Competition: Stories Beat Stuff 3 - win a $30k trip to New Zealand!

The summer holidays and/or the music festival season is coming to an unfortunate and inevitable end - and you know what that means right? The real world is about to re-commence (by which I mean no more hanging out in the park getting wasted in 30 degree heat when you should be working). So how much of a #winning opportunity would it be to be the lucky recipient of a $30,000  trip to New Zealand... along with  three of those friends you hung out with in the park ?!  If you're any more hedonistic than your librarians grand-ma then this is probably applicable to you!

In order to be in with a chance of this life changing moment of your formative years, think about what 'stuff' (i.e. inanimate objects) you would trade for this experience! Check their facebook page for more info, or visit

Once you've come up with something ridiculously valuable (both in financial and functioning terms) submit a video or a photo of what you would trade, for that all important trip to New Zealand – making sure it’s a real object! Choose three of your best friends that you want to come along with you, and then share your entry round via Facebook/ Google+/ Twitter to get as many votes as possible.

There is also a second prize draw just for voting! Vote for an entry and be in to win flights for two to New Zealand.

Here is a short clip of New Zealand, and shows exactly the kind of reasons that make it worth entering!

They're calling this one 'culture kaboom' and you can see exactly why! Naturally heated baths from nature along with amazing food, and everything in between!

If raw nature's not your thing there is always the 'City Splendour' of Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland - New Zealand’s three largest cities, allowing you to go from a downtown club to whale watching in 30 mins!

This is the what I would give up in order to get out there!! The one thing that gets rinsed on a daily basis!!!

With a weekly show on Nasty FM and mixes for 1xtra, Kiss and Rinse keep an ear out for his productions! On his remix of this track he has turned in a funky/2-step track with elements of grime and bassline, using Stacey’s vocal and creating wide ranging sound! This is out as a remix of the single package on 23 September!

Video: 50 Cent talks 'New Day' single

50 discusses his heavy weighted new new single feat Dr Dre and Alicia Keys, which is a gigantic move, perhaps his big investment into re-launching his career to what it once was. I have a lot of respect for 50 but his grip on the scene has loosened considerably over the last few years - notably after losing a beef he sparked off with Rick Ross!

Review: Marley's Mellow Moods 'Relaxation Generation' mini festival @ Vibe Bar 19 August

Clarissa Pabi reviews the event last Sunday, exclusively for BlatantlyBlunt!

A week before Carnival and Channel 4’s #HouseParty, East London’s Vibe Bar played host to Marley’s Mellow Mood’s ‘Relaxation Generation’ – a vibrant 14 hour musical celebration awash with great food, great drinks (get yourself some Marley’s Mellow Mood if you haven’t already), and usual festival sound system glitch.

Spread over 3 stages ‘Relaxation Generation’ aimed to be a mini festival offering everything innovative happening in bass music right now as well as reflecting the most pioneering acts in drum & bass, dubstep, grime, reggae, hip hop and soul. And with acts like Mz Bratt, Natty and the godfather of UK Urban music himself Rodney P, it certainly did just that.
To begin with sets were short and sweet (in line with the mini festival theme); and the folky-soulful serenadings of Sam Garret and Liam Bailey turned grittier as the day progressed. As the festival got going acts which seemed to be particularly enjoyed were Mz Bratt, Gappy Ranks and Basement Jaxx.

Mz Bratt treated festival goes to her eclectic blend of grime and UK funky stylings, finishing appropriately with ‘Rocker Launcher’, which (like ‘Selecta’) is set to be a summer scorcher.

Gappy Ranks held it down as the UK’s biggest reggae/dancehall artist kicking his set off with ‘Stinkin Rich’ and ending with ‘Heaven in her eyes’. Like Mz Bratt he overcame the odd sound system glitch, and in between his tracks he spoke to the audience about the importance of reggae as a social tool. It was a powerful moment.

There was a surprise appearance from Basement Jaxx’s Vula Malinga who left the stage and came down to sing and dance with festival goers. She ended with an amazing rendition of Dawn Penn’s ‘No. no, no’. Vocals were of the Richter. Power. House.

The roof was raised as the decks were taken over by the likes of Shepdog, Tayo, Daddy Nature, Kongo Sound, Farm Yardies and the Positive Vibes Crew who played thoughout the festival.
And later on festival goers were treated to legends which included Roni Size, Zinc, Dynamite MC, Rodney P and Skitz. Music resounded along the streets of Brick Lane all night.

But the Relaxation Generation was more than just music. There was a chance to see Kevin Macdonald’s critically acclaimed film, MARLEY and up-and-coming poet George the Poet who delivers socio-political commentary and humour in his poems.

A great mini festival. Looking forward to next year’s one.

The UK's number one reggae artist speaks to BlatantlyBlunt TV, at the Marley's Mood Relaxation Generation mini-festival at one of London's most popular venues - the Vibe Bar, in Brick Lane, East London.

Gappy discusses growing up in Harlesden, performing at the Sting Jamaica soundclash in Kingston Town, touring the North and South America and more!

Audio: Shyne – You’re Welcome (Diddy Diss)

The ex Bad Boy records artist pops shots at his former boss. This is intense!

Video: Remus - MOBC

Remus is ‘on one’ with his new offering. It doesn’t take the cleverest person to figure out where the influence might’ve come from for this track - listen and you’ll crack it yourself. The question is whether that influence is too great.

The bars and delivery here are at a real high level and the black and white swagger of the video fits perfectly. It’s no surprise that the YMCMB sound is gonna get jumped on, mind you this also has hints of older stuff too. Either way this track is sick, and as far as imitations go don’t try it unless you can hold up to the originals. Thankfully Remus can, so I’d expect more good stuff to come from him in future. The son of Farma G of pioneering group Taskforce is surely one to watch for!

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the last few weeks, you've most likely been inundated with the flurry of Olympic mania which has spread across the whole world - despite our minor population in relation to the rest of the competing nations, Britain finished third, behind the super powers USA and China!

With a total of 65 medals at these Games (29 golds, 17 silvers and 19 bronzes), this is our best medal haul in over 100 years! Some say it's down to our home advantage, but the French have accused Britain of cheating its way to gold medals!

Being one of the major Olympic sponsors, Adidas have created this new viral video, using the timeless classic 'Don’t Stop Me Now', written by the late great Freddie Mercury back in 1978! The video features Olympic medallists Sir Chris Hoy, Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton, Louis Smith and more athletes from Team GB in their own version of the track - celebrating the success of London 2012.

Review/download: Macca - Monster Mac [mixtape]

The latest writer for Blatantly Blunt, Clarissa Pabi drops a review of the new mixtape from Stay Fresh's Macca. Download link at bottom...

If you haven’t heard of Macca you’re probably from London or not even fan of grime. This week the MC, who represents West Midlands collective Stay Fresh released his second mixtape entitled ‘Monster Mac’. And the message I think that Londoners, and fans of grime, can take from it is (to paraphrase Biggie): "well if you don’t know, well now ya know".

‘Monster Mac’, however, is not enmeshed in the same kind of South-East coast/West Midlands coast beef – a track like ‘This is the midlands’ makes that clear. Macca, Pressure, and C4 are not saying we are better than ‘you’ but rather ‘there ain’t no competition’. What is great about the mixtape, and that track, is that not only is it an introduction to Macca, and his forthcoming album ‘25’; but it also manages to be an introduction to the sound coming out of the West Midlands, as well as a re-introduction to a sound that emerged out of London.

On a track like ‘Now you know’ Macca manages to give us a quick history of grime, and in that sense he pays homage to it - the base is dutty (and I think I heard a little So Solid in the flow?). Moreover on a track like ‘When We Come Through’ Macca’s flow becomes reminiscent of JME on a track like ‘96 bars of revenge’. This isn’t to say that Macca’s flow is not unique, it indubitably is, but it is to say that as an artist he is aware of what is unique and distinctive about voices in grime. Macca and his Stay Fresh click recognise the importance of London but they represent a very distinct sound.

‘Lightwork’ is the best track, for me, in terms of it demonstrating Macca’s flow (closely flowed by ‘No hook’). Macca switches it up constantly and seamlessly. Like ‘Lightwork’ the sound of grime dominates the sound of the mixtape in tracks like the classic ‘Mike Lowery’ but there are some hip-hop tracks which have been originally produced.

Macca - Lightwork

Standard mixtapeness come about on tracks like ‘Runnaway Love’, ‘Here I am’ and ‘Moment 4 life’ which are sampled from Ludacris and Nicki Minaj respectively. Lyrically Macca’s ‘Runaway Love’ is more graphic than Ludacris’s original and in it he shows a natural flair for story-telling. Macca, J1 and Pressure do justice to Tyga’s ‘Light Dream’ transforming into ‘Where would I be’ – the vibe is light, deep and chilled.

‘So di ting set’ features Sean Blaze and has a bashment vibe and – it’ll go down great ‘inna di rave’. Continually mixing it up with genres Macca also gives us a slow jam. ‘What you need’ is full of all that mack daddy pre-noughies naughtiness – foreplay and word play are blended effortlessly - it’s one for the ladies and shows lyrical brilliance.

Macca - So Di Ting Set ft Sean Blaze (Prod by Z. Dot)

‘Monster Mac – The Mix CD’ does what a great mixtape should do. It traces influences from the UK and US. It pays homage to different musical scenes and even to the females in these scenes (Leshurr gets a shout out). It’s collaborative and eclectic. Macca forges flow and voice and is backed by great production throughout - and yeah and there are loads of tracks.
