News: Black Eyed Peas Picked For Super Bowl XLV Halftime

It's been a boring time for the younger crowd in the recent Super Bowls and there is one person - or one body part - to blame: Janet Jackson. Since her performance during halftime of the 2004 Super Bowl with P. Diddy, Nelly and Justin Timberlake, which included a showing of her nipple as per the cause of a wardrobe malfunction, the Super Bowl organizers have decided to go a more conservative route.

The younger generation, who is more likely to place Super Bowl bets, has been turning away at halftime during this recent stretch of classic rock. Since 2004, we've see Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Paul McCartney. Clearly, hip hop has been shunned since Janet Jackson's slippage.

But at Super Bowl XLV, we'll finally get a flavor that caters more to the young than the older, as the Black Eyed Peas have been selected to perform. The Black Eyed Peas previously performed at the pregame show of the Super Bowl in 2005 and they also performed during the halftime of the Grey Cup, which is the championship game of the Canadian Football League.

But the Peas do have one female in their foursome and some people have been wondering whether she'll be as risque as Janet was. Fergie has dawned some interesting outfits at certain awards shows or public events, so there is the possibility, but keep in mind that MTV produced the 2004 show and they won't be on the job this year, so it's unlikely we saw something as eye-popping.

The Black Eyed Peas are a pop-infused hip hop act and they definitely cater to more of the family crowd than the streets. For their careers, they have sold over 28 million albums worldwide.

Super Bowl XLV takes place on February 6th, 2011.

Video: BIG CAKES & RAGGO ZULU REBEL - COME AROUND

Big Cakes and Raggo Zulu Rebel have jumped on heavy grime beat from Stylus which samples the Collie Buddz classic of the same name and thrown some shotter related bars on top. The two are becoming a formidable force and have dropped some heavy videos this year.

News: T-Pain Heading To Lil Wayne's Young Money Label [from AllHipHop.com]

It appears Lil Wayne's Young Money Records has added more fire power to its formidable roster, with the signing of Tallahassee, Florida rapper/singer/producer, T-Pain.

According to Cash Money/Young Money's official jeweler, Gabriel Jacobs of Rafaello & Co, he recently completed a new, purple and black, oversized, diamond and ruby encrusted Young Money pendant for T-Pain.

In an exclusive clip on VladTv.com, Jacobs showcased T-Pain's latest piece of jewelry, which has over 200 karats in rubies and 300 karats in diamonds, also had T-Pain's Nappy Boy logo embossed around the edges.

The pendant by itself is worth $45,000 and when worn with the ruby/diamond encrusted chain, T-Pain will be walking around with about $100,000 worth of jewelry around his neck.

T-Pain was originally signed to Akon's Konvict Muzik imprint. He released his last three albums including his last release, Thr33 Ringz, via Jive/Zomba."

Tempa T's Next Hype Removals [phone call]

The is one of the great things about grime music being embraced by people far removed from what the public would perceive a typical grime fan to be.
I wonder if the creator used the soundboard on my site, which ranked top when people search 'Tempa t soundboard'. Shouts to Joe Westwood for creating it!

Audio/download: Royal T - Damn it (Exo Remedy Remix) [instrumental]

Every time I listen to grime without MCs it reminds me how much of an instrumental focussed genre it truly is. This track definitely follows that train of thought.
Shouts to Exo Remedy from Essex who's been producing some hot beats recently!

Video: Mann - 9x Outta 10

Proof of how far a big feature can get you! I hadn't heard of this guy Mann till he did the track Buzzing with 50 cent, which I'm really feeling right now. He's now released this video which is a remake of a Kurupt and DJ Quik tune of the same name. Big!!

Audio: Tinie Tempah & Plan B feature on BBC Radio 4

If the UK urban scene needed any more mainstream certification in 2010 look no further than last night's show on the BBC's spoken-word station Radio 4.

Weekly arts show Front Row presenter John Wilson spoke to them about how their under-privileged background inspired their content and analysed their music in a bit more depth. Pretty interesting listening!
Next year can we expect Tempa T and Blacks to explain how they release their anger in musical form? I hope so...

Audio: Eminem Ft. 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Dr Dre, Stat Quo & Ca$his - Syllables

The rumour has surfaced and it seems like this one's been gathering some e-dust in the Aftermath studios for a little while. Regardless this is dope and needs to be heard.
Stat Quo and Ca$his are two names you maybe unfamiliar with, and were two signings to Shady Records that never really took off, tho I'm still a fan of Stat!

Review: Asus' Musicbox game!

I just had a little play on a new application/game that laptop company Asus have released. They have a new model out called Sonic Master Music Box with powerful speakers, which will come as a relief to those that are sick of hearing tinny music from their laptop! The application lets you create your own special rock star type character (girls and boys characters are available!). All you have to do is pick one of them, upload your photo (can be a live picture from your webcam or one stored on your computer), and record your message! Being the ambassador for my website that I am, I posted a message saying how great BlatantlyBlunt was for grime and hip-hop!

Though once I had checked other peoples' entries on Asus’ site, I noticed they actually sang a tune, which made mine look a bit weak! Not too bothered though it’s all fun and games, it reminded me of that dancing elves flash application that was sent out but this was better I reckon! I definitely recommend checking out the application here.

Kanye West – The Joy Feat. Pete Rock, Jay-Z, Charlie Wilson & Kid Cudi

I know what you're thinking, isn't this one a little old well it is but I think the track's gone over a lotta people's heads due to the phenomenal level of regular output Kanye's been producing this year. He didn't 'produce' this one but he does drop perhaps two of his best verses to date. Pete Rock samples Curtis Mayfield’s “The Makings Of You,” and it's been stuck in my head since Sunday!

Review: M.I.K - The 5 hour shift EP

Continuing the theme of work related mixtape titles M.I.K presents the next installment of his unique brand of grime; ‘The 5 hour shift’. Following his sophomore full length mixtape ‘Grime 2 Five’ that dropped earlier in the year, this five track showcase is proof that the art form is progressing and the work is constantly being put out, with this being his third release this year.

On ‘Trouble maker part 2’, he pushes the flow pattern and delivery up a few notches and weaves his way thru the nutty Wiley beat, describing his leadership status in the grime game, being the one to check ‘for the new formation’.

‘Duppy and leave’ is a potential grime anthem with a generous dollop of aggression that ticks all the right boxes. Lyrically it’s a track that could easily be played on sets long after it’s initial hype has moved. However, it’s a wonder Teddy’s beat was used as there were remixes that surpassed this particular one, despite him being one of the elite producers of 2010.

‘Way before’ is a great collaboration with Dimples that shows they’re both seasoned artists, bringing clarity and content oozing with confidence and metaphors. These qualities only come with experience and the opening bars prove exactly that. This is probably my favourite track on the EP as there’s no messing, just solid grime from both of them.

‘Plot freestyle’ is a darker offering with edgy bars stabbing the bouncy beat from producer Faze Miyake who I’ll be checking for in 2011. Lyrically the bar is kept high on this track and the sinister delivery suits it well, and makes the next track sound refreshingly light hearted.

On ‘One of a kind’ Blizzard gives MIK a more US dirty south style production which I've always been an advocate of grime MCs spitting on. The content is slightly more volatile and less threat based which many grime MCs can over do but delivery is consistent and metaphors on point.

To sum this EP up it’s MIK in grind mode, and further proof that switching up your style is so necessary to stay relevant in today’s crowded grime scene. Beat selection is bang on and the delivery has become more relentless. Definitely worth the £2.99 price tag in my informed opinion!

Video/Download: Lethal Bizzle - Pow 2011 DJ Raph GRIME History Remix

Brilliant concept for a remix/mash up and what a way to bring you the official video for the re-make of the only 'real' grime song to make a top 10. DJ Raph has chopped up 60 of the greatest beats and original instrumentals previously used by Lethal Bizzle, JME, Wiley, 2Face, Ghetto, P Money, Chipmunk & Kano.

Video: 'A Good Christmas' - US hip hop parody Xmas style.

Finally a hip hop parody that isn't cliched and predictable! 2CentTV have more-or-less accurately mimicked the voice/rap style/image to 15 of the biggest/most well known mainly hip hop stars of the last few years. Despite a few predictable impressions, they've hit the spot here I reckon. I was rofling a few times if that counts for anything.
The track is called 'A Good Christmas' and features parodies of Nicki Minaj, Eminem, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Rihanna, Birdman, Plies, Waka Flocka, Willow Smith, Lady Gaga & Wyclef. Considerable effort I reckon! Imagine it happening with the UK's biggest!
There are a number of major artists excluded from the list, like Akon, Diddy, Snoop, 50, I could go on! Did they refuse to be parodied (if they were asked) or are they becoming less relevant?
Here's the Kanye West GOOD Friday style artwork for it.

Review: Marger - Kushwave EP

Logan Sama declared Marger "is at the forefront of a new wave of young MC's bringing back the authentic underground sound of grime..." Although Kushwave is a strong body of work, there is a little more to do to fully back up the earlier statement.

On "My Thing", we hear Marger's personal progression, from his early days of doing dirt to making changes in his life for him and his daughter. Sibling's hook sits well on the track and breaks up Marger's verses nicely.

"Stress" is littered with angry vocals over a bassy beat which gives an insight into Marger's daily grind. The production reflects the knuckle-head approach to his lyrics and angelic vocal sample lulls you into a false sense of security before the vocals crash through the beat once again.

On "Grime Ting" Marger flows over a rasping, filthy beat, addressing the haters and showcasing everything we love about grime bars. Production takes on a slightly more dubstep stance with thundering riffs and a few vocal samples thrown in for extra effect.

Spitting over a synthy Rude Kid-esque beat, on "Power" he delivers bars about the raw physicality and emotive aspects of sex. Mercston weighs in with a feature, but his "sweet boy" persona doesn't especially add anything to the tune.

On RIP, Badness delivers the hook on a thumping bassy beat. Marger brings more knuckle-headed "bang, bang, shank, shank" bars where he tells us that he's never been rushed. Badness' hook stays on the same grimy theme but is slightly below par for someone of his standard although by the end they definitely don't seem like a team you 'wan fi try test'!!

Kushwave is a good insight into Marger's mind, and begins to elevate him from an MC to 'artist' status, but there is room for improvement before he can justify being on the front line of the new wave. Definitely worth the purchase tho!.

Video Review: Jammer - Back to the 90s

Jammer jumps on a hot Toddla T production for the latest visual offering from his current album Jahmanji (Big Dada). With video direction from Josh Thomas, nostalgic nineties memorabilia and cameos are on heavy rotation. The video's as vibrant as the hook is infectious, making this one a candidate for the next in line of successful grime cross-overs.

Jammer and C Gritz take it back to the nineties from the outset, jumping in a Bill & Ted style time machine phone booth and get ushered in to a house party from yesteryear. With stylistic direction from London fashion guru Sarah Young, vintage Nike Air Max 90s, Moshchino and Reebok Pumps are all thrown into the mix. These, along with carefully calculated colour clashes and patterns that marked the decade make this video not just one for grime fans but a reference point for the emerging trend of ravers bringing back the old school vibe!

Video: Styles P - Barbara

Not sure exactly what Barbara is (my best guess is alcohol?) but this track goes hard with a great video to compliment it. Styles kills it lyrically and the beat from Warren G is enough to make you put your hood up and walk like you got a bust knee..

News: G Dep admits to killing from 1993

It took nearly two decades, but the guilt of murder finally became too much for Trevell Coleman [aka G-Dep].

Wednesday night, after years of living with the burden, Coleman, 36, walked into the 25th Precinct and shockingly confessed to the very cold case, the sources said.
The career criminal -- once signed to superstar rap mogul Shawn "Diddy" Combs' record label -- was just 18 when he fatally shot a Queens man outside an East Harlem housing project in 1993, police sources said.
"I shot and killed someone 17 years ago," Coleman told a cop in the station house.

As Coleman continued to reveal more details of the Oct. 19, 1993, murder of John Henkel outside the James Weldon Johnson Houses -- things only the killer would know -- the officer reached out to investigators at the 23rd Precinct, where the crime took place.
"It was just eating away at him," said a police source.
Coleman, who grew up in the projects, told cops he was riding a bike when he rolled up on Henkel, 32, on Park Avenue and East 114th Street and announced a robbery.
Coleman told Detective William Dunn that Henkel resisted and grabbed his .40-caliber gun.
He allegedly admitted that he pulled away and shot his victim three times in the chest.
Coleman said he fled and tossed the weapon into the East River.
Henkel was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
When the detective reviewed the cold-case file, he was amazed to discover that Coleman's tale matched up.

Coleman, who has racked up more than 25 arrests since 2003 for drugs, burglary and grand larceny, was charged with murder, and is being held without bail.
"My client is presumed innocent, and the case is going to grand jury," said Coleman's lawyer, Michael Alperstein.
Coleman, who rapped under the name "G-Dep," was signed in 1998 to a $350,000, five-album deal with Combs' Bad Boy Records. His first album, "Child of the Ghetto," was released in 2001.
The song "Let's Get It" featured Coleman trading rhymes with Combs and fellow Bad Boy artist Black Rob.
Coleman no longer has ties to the label, a spokewoman said.

Lethal Bizzle POW 2011 Video Trailer

Exclusive first peek at the Lethal Bizzle POW 2011 video.. Looking BIG!!

Video: Stylah - Prologue

Stylah's completely smashed it on this one. Showing how strong his name is within the uk scene he's got some of the most recognizable artsists miming his bars. This is sick, mainly due to it being original but also the bars and beat are on point. Shout out to Stylah all day!
the video features the likes of actor/director Noel Clarke, rapper/radio presenter/entrepreneur Charlie Sloth, radio personalities Ace + Vis, rapper/actor Bashy, comedian Doc Brown, celebrity ex ganster Dave Courtney, singer Chrome and numerous other rap artists including Sway, Koke, Sincere, Lowkey, Smiler, G Frsh.

Event: EPMD @ Kentish Town Forum, London

The New York hip hop legends pass thru the best half of London (thats North!) for a show. Definitely something for the ageing B Boy that knows Eric Sermon's tracks beyond '(Just like) Music'.

Audio: DJ KAY SLAY FT. BUSTA RHYMES, LAYZIE BONE, TWISTA & JAZ-O - 60 SECOND ASSASSINS

Veteran NYC mixtape DJ/radio host DJ Kay Slay is a major figure of the New York hip hop culture who I was lucky enough to meet on 33rd St, in Manhattan NYC back in 2003! He's been the middle man of a lot of the big beefs in NY such as 50 vs Ja Rule and was previously a big time graffiti artist known as Dez.
He also hosts singles like this; where he's got a handful of certified MCs and on this one, produced by G Force they're on that double time insane flow! If you don't know who Jaz-O is, he was Jay-Z's mentor many moons ago (see the similarity in name?). This is the first single from his new album “Rhyme or Die” which will be his last.

Audio: T-Wayne ft. Smoke - Hoes And Ladies

'He raps, he sings' is the name of the upcoming album from T-Wayne (that's right, Weezy and Teddy Pender-ass). They've just dropped this with field mob member Smoke and I'm fully rating it! T Pain's a sick rapper and was on that before he sang... that's what people forget.
"look at all that ass, you aint got to have titties... at least you part of the itty bitty committee really".

T-Wayne ft. Smoke - Hoes And Ladies

Video: T.I Ft Rick Ross - Pledge Allegiance

TI is a solid artist. I was listening to his new album No Mercy and despite the fact he's slightly conventional/predictable he's actually a great rapper.

Emerging artists should look to him for a professional approach to making appealing yet hard bodied and captivating music.

Audio: DPOWER-DIESLE & C.GRITZ - STING FREESTYLE

"BRAND NEW FREESTYLE FROM 2 NANG GRIME SCENE ARTIST GOING HARD". Diesle's words (the 1st MC on the tune), not mine but I couldn't have said it better.
Two artists doing big things that came up with Jammer spit fire over this dancehall track...

My interview with Tulisa

Last Friday I headed down to the set of 'Suicide Kids', a new movie Tulisa from N Dubz is featuring in, to interview her for MTV Wrap Up. I was joined by the likes of The Sun and ITN but managed to grab 10 mins during her rehearsals to chat about her part in 'Suicide Kids', what we can expect from the new N Dubz album Love.Live.Life, her love for Lara Croft and more.

Tulisa was really easy to get on with i.e. not on a diva flex! The movie itself sounds promising and features a lot of recognisable names from the new cohort of young UK cinema talent...

Fresh US hip hop here from a female Connecticut rapper - Essence. It's produced by Sid "Omen" Brown of StadiumRed Studios (known for his work on Drake’s latest album). Featuring Maliqe, this will drop in early January... I like this!

Audio/Download: Demon [Macabre Unit] x FatKidOnFire Mix

Don't ask whether this is grime or dubstep. I couldn't tell you as it's stuck in eternal limbo between the two.... Filthy mix here from the man like Demon of legendary crew Macabre unit! Keep this away from old folks' homes. You have been warned. They might be more suited to checking my interview with him, or his recent one with FatKidOnFire.

Video: Logan Sama - Chosen Ones feat OGz

Logan Sama has recently been doing a series of late night shows on Kiss 100 called 'Chosen Ones' where he gets prominent grime crews to spray bars. This one featuring South East London's OG's. Check P Money, Little D, Blacks and Jendor go in, filmed by cameraman sketch.

Audio: Colonel Red vs Yungun (a.k.a. Essa) - Holla RMX

New joint here from Yungun who's been absent from the scene for the last few years but has been dropping over the last month or so. I'm really liking this one and it sounds like Essa is getting back to his best!

If you're not familiar with his stuff, check this one from a few years back. MAAAAD lyrical real hip hop, I got so much love for this tune.

Video: Devlin - Let It Go (Ft Labrinth)

I like this new one from Devs and Lab but I think there's a few too many elements of the track; too many things going on! Either way I've got respect for both the artists involved and this could do well in the charts.. However the video is ridiculously similar to Stan by Eminem, from the 'wifebeater' vest, down to the bit in front of the mirror and it goes on.

Video: Trilla - WHA GWARN?

New online promo vid here from Trilla who's currently my favourite Birmingham MC due to his lyrical content, consistency and ability to have fun on a track! Normally known for being a bassline MC, he's been jumping on grime recently (check his woooo riddim!!) and on this one he reps all things Jamaica over a bass-heavy beat. I'm rating this a lot! Cop it on iTunes.

Audio/Download: Lloyd Banks - Start It Up [Official UK Remix] ft Sway, Giggs, Kanye, Swizz Beats & Ryan Leslie

Lloyd Banks hit the UK this week and enlisted Sway and Giggs to appear on the official UK remix of 'START IT UP' which also features Kanye West, Swizz Beats and Ryan Leslie.

Personally I think 'Start It Up' is the hottest track on 'Hunger For More 2'. Banks spoke about the album and more when he appeared on Westwood's 1xtra show recently.

The Sun Article: 'Kids study grime MC for GCSEs'

LUCKY schoolkids got a treat when their teacher used a grime MC to help them prepare for their GCSEs.
The ingenious idea came from teacher KATE MEAD, who got children to use JME's Twitter page to create a brainstorm of his idiolect.

"If you're not up to speed on idiolects - in basic terms, it refers to the language used by an individual. Some people's use of launguage is more unique to them than others.
Hence why JME is a good subject, because he really does have his own take on language.
Throughout his career as an MC, the north Londoner has always been known for his emphasis on particular words.
In his early years he used words like 'serious', and helped to popularise the term Boy Better Know - originally used by fellow MERIDIAN CREW member BIG H.
Nowadays catchphrases like Blam! (the title of his latest album) and 'Well well well', as well as his Tweets where he uses the same word in every post for a day, mark him out from other MCs.
Amazingly, the class' other subject was none other than sharp-witted comedian and writer STEPHEN FRY.
Grime stars will have their own panel shows in no time.

I just can see WILEY hosting 9 Out Of 10 Brrraps..."

Source: The Sun.

Even if there are some shocking puns and stupid statements on here like ''In his early years he used words like 'serious''', it's always good to get some positive PR for grime. As sensationalist as The Sun can be, they do cover a lot of grime music so props to them (Marcus Barnes is the most regular grime contributor as well as the writer formally known as Prancehall who provides a variety of content for the The Sun).

Video: Dream McLean, Row D Beats, iRate @ Terror Danjah album launch

Check my latest vid here from Terror Danjah's 'Undeniable' Launch Party down at the club East Village in Hoxton which in my opinion has the best quality sound out of most of the major small/medium sized clubs..

Make sure you watch till the end to see a guy that didn't get a chance to check the mirror when he left the toilets...

Video: Swizz Beatz Dicusses DMX's Struggles, Jay-Z Beef

Anyone that knows me or follows my site will know that Swizz Beatz is one of my favourite hip hop producers ever. For those with amnesia or a limited knowledge of the game, Swizzy has been killing it on productions duties since 'ruff ryders anthem' so knows a thing or two about making hits... oh he's also married to Alicia Keys.

La The Darkman aka L.A.D - Gangsta Shit

2 new vid's in one here from the ex Wu Tang affiliate that never dented the scene like he shoulda, but he's released a lot of good material with DJ Drama and Willie the Kid. This guy's like a more underground version of the Game but a little more authentic in the way he does it.

Video: Sheffield gets grimey over bassline

Gang of MCs up in Sheffield spit bars over bassline and grime in a varying degree of slapstick and straight braggadocio styles! Feeling the rawness on this tho I have to say! None of them are familiar to me but for the record they're Jyzerr, Harmz, Ramsay, AK, Coco, Vipes, Kombat, Scliffy, Rawkid, Mr.Greenman.

Video: P Money Feat. D Double E, Footsie & Blacks - Slang Like This Remix

P drops the remix video to what has been undoubtedly one of the grime anthems of 2010. Alongside D Double E, Footsie & Blacks this mammoth of a track takes a grimey injection from three more distinctive MCs that need no introduction.

Look out for P Money and Blacks' forthcoming collaborative mixtape. No date set as yet, and OGz season Vol. 2 is another one due for release shortly.

Wiley & Westwood to be on Never Mind the Buzzcocks

I had pretty much given up on this ever happening but I now believe the hype! Noel Fielding and Phill Jupitus are joined by guest presenter Tim Westwood and panellists JLS, Holly Walsh, Russell Watson and the one and only Wiley. I know this will be VERY entertaining! I hope JLS get rinsed to death by Wiley & Tim and everyone else!

It's on BBC 2 Thu 2 December!

Video: ThisIs50.com chats to Giggs

ThisIs50.com is 50 cent's social networking site (as if a simple website would be sufficient for 50!). The main video guy on the site Jack Thriller chats to Giggs about a bag of stuff including the obvious ones like being from London, his album, "Let Em Have It", selling dope when he was younger, and musical inspirations... Giggs' mumbling and/or accent has led them to subtitle it!
