It's been a boring time for the younger crowd in the recent Super Bowls and there is one person - or one body part - to blame: Janet Jackson. Since her performance during halftime of the 2004 Super Bowl with P. Diddy, Nelly and Justin Timberlake, which included a showing of her nipple as per the cause of a wardrobe malfunction, the Super Bowl organizers have decided to go a more conservative route.
The younger generation, who is more likely to place Super Bowl bets, has been turning away at halftime during this recent stretch of classic rock. Since 2004, we've see Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Paul McCartney. Clearly, hip hop has been shunned since Janet Jackson's slippage.
But at Super Bowl XLV, we'll finally get a flavor that caters more to the young than the older, as the Black Eyed Peas have been selected to perform. The Black Eyed Peas previously performed at the pregame show of the Super Bowl in 2005 and they also performed during the halftime of the Grey Cup, which is the championship game of the Canadian Football League.
But the Peas do have one female in their foursome and some people have been wondering whether she'll be as risque as Janet was. Fergie has dawned some interesting outfits at certain awards shows or public events, so there is the possibility, but keep in mind that MTV produced the 2004 show and they won't be on the job this year, so it's unlikely we saw something as eye-popping.
The Black Eyed Peas are a pop-infused hip hop act and they definitely cater to more of the family crowd than the streets. For their careers, they have sold over 28 million albums worldwide.
Super Bowl XLV takes place on February 6th, 2011.
