Forget Jammer, it's the BNP sending for Lethal B now!

Article from the British National Party (BNP) website about Lethal B's recent incitement for the murder of their leader Nick Griffin:

British National Party legal officer Lee Barnes has laid a criminal charge against Ghanaian-origin rap singer “Lethal Bizzle” after he called for Nick Griffin’s murder on Twitter.

Lethal Bizzle, whose real name is Maxwell Ansah, sent out a Twitter message yesterday which read: “Got an idea, u wanna be famous? Kill the BNP leader, u will be a hero.”

Mr Barnes said this was a threat which could not be taken lightly.

“He is linked with black gun gangs in London and this constitutes a serious threat,” Mr Barnes said.

The Serious Crime Act 2007, section 45 states that a person commits an offence if:

(a)he does an act capable of encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence; and
(b)he believes–
(i)that the offence will be committed; and
(ii)that his act will encourage or assist its commission.

“Mr Ansah’s twitter is clearly an incitement to serious violence against Nick Griffin,” Mr Barnes said.
“Imagine if a threat like that had been issued by Mr Griffin against Mr Ansah. The BNP leader would have been arrested within minutes, but it seems that black rappers are somehow protected.”

They then quote some lyrics from his biggest tune, Pow! (which they describe as 'jungle noises') but fail to realize it's not his lyrics they're quoting as they copy and paste Jamakabi's quasi-patois verse...
It's definitly worth checking the comments to this article also, one of my favourite being one contributors' attempts to submit some additional lyrics:

I cant count so I use ma fingas,
I'm stuck on too pleeze help outta this singa
wun, too, ?
wun, too, for ?
wun, too, sevvun ?

Mr Hudson & Stylah - Anyone but him

Anyone But Him Feat STYLAHbymrhudson
Mercury recording artist Mr Hudson this afternoon announced on his twitter page that London rap artist Stylah has won the competition to feature on the UK edition of his new single 'Anyone But Him'.

The song, which features Kanye West on the original album version, is due for release in May with Stylah guest featuring. Stylah will also be joining Mr Hudson on stage to perform the track on his current UK tour.

Regulars to the site will remember that last November I posted up a version with Ghetts and Tinie Tempah. Which one's better do you reckon?

Akala: Thinking outside the musical box

Check this article in London's free morning paper Metro about Mobo Award winning rapper Akala who, in case you were unaware, is the brother of garage queen Ms Dynamite...
‘We spend our lives being put in boxes; it’s the boxes I can’t stand, man.’ It doesn’t take much to get British hip hop wordsmith Akala (aka 26-year-old Kingslee James Daley) on a roll, as we chat over a healthy pick’*’mix from his favourite veggie restaurant. This amiable rabble-rouser has always looked to break the mould, combining sharp lyrics with cherry-picked pop culture hooks, from 1980s indie to electro-trance. ‘The funny thing is, this approach isn’t new for hip hop,’ he points out. ‘The musical philosophy of my latest album was Aphex Twin meets Public Enemy meets Depeche Mode with a bit of Radiohead sprinkled in – then there’s the heavy metal stuff, which fazes some people.
‘I make no bones about loving music. I’m not scared of offending anyone who thinks I shouldn’t make metal or acoustic classical folk, or work with someone who’s composed for the English National Ballet if I want to.’
Along with several quickfire mixtapes, Akala’s acclaimed previous albums, Mobo-winning 2006 debut It’s Not A Rumour and 2007’s Freedom Lasso, continue to sell steadily, and also gave rise to the fruitful Hip Hop Shakespeare Company (he’s just returned from a youth writing workshop in Denmark).
The literary inspiration for new album Doublethink is George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984. It’s not the first time Orwell’s classic has influenced records – David Bowie used it as the basis of his 1974 album Diamond Dogs; The Eurythmics released a synth soundtrack in the year 1984. But Akala’s apocalyptic vision is galvanising and beautifully arranged on numbers such as Welcome To Dystopia and Yours And My Children.
‘We wanted to approach this album like we were scoring a film,’ he grins. ‘To me, 1984 felt like prophecy rather than fiction. There are so many parallels with modern life and what seemed like preposterous ideas in the book.’

As a rapper, he was particularly struck by 1984’s use of totalitarian ‘newspeak’. ‘I was fascinated by the concept that limiting language limits people’s thinking. I actually see that working with young people who have brilliant ideas without the words to communicate them. It’s when you don’t have the tools to express yourself that you get violent. How is it that a “civilised” society is producing 16-year-olds who can’t read or write?

Gangstarr's Guru Dies After Long Battle With Cancer

After a nearly two-month hospitalization, legendary rapper Guru (best known as the frontman for Gangstarr) died Monday morning (April 19), after a long battle with cancer, reports DJPremierBlog.com. He was just 43 years old.

Solar, Guru's business partner and sidekick in recent years, told the Yo!Raps (who's PR company had been coordinating press for Guru since his hospitalization) that the 43-year-old rapper had been suffering from a "malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed".

He had tried to keep the cancer diagnosis private, but in early March, news leaked that Guru had been admitted to the hospital, suffered a heart attack, and was recovering from a mystery illness. Previous reports said hesuffered from Anoxia, effects from a lengthy history of asthma and lung problems, but these new findings reveal a much worst condition.

"The world has lost one of the best MCs and hip-hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solar said in a statement. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.

"For the fans that reached out with love and support, I can't tell you how much that meant to Guru and myself. Guru prepared this letter (read below) while he was in the hospital for the fans," the producer continued. "I hope now that Guru has moved on to a better place."

Guru (real name: Keith Elam) rose to fame in the 80s as the frontman to the legendary rap duo, Gangstarr, also consisting of DJ Premier. The group released the classic single, "Words I Manifest," which was followed by their critically acclaimed debut, No More Mr. Nice Guy, in 1989. The group went on to release six official albums through 2003, before they split and went their separate ways.

Guru went on to found 7 Grand Records, partnering with producer Solar, and embarked on a solo career.

Since falling ill, there's been a lot of controversy over news of his hospitalization. Family members of Guru publicly claimed that Solar had taken over control of the rapper's decision making and had even barred them from visiting. The only official statements being released from the veteran rapper were relayed through his longtime partner Solar, which raised eyebrows from former Guru collaborators and friends. Solar, however, publicly denied claimsof any malicious intentions and was only following the rapper's instructions.

Unfortunately, Guru never got well enough to clear things up himself.

On Monday (April 19) when Guru passed away, so did a piece of hip-hop. He'll forever go down in history as one of the best MCs to ever do it. Rest in peace GURU!

Prof Green and Plan B make the top 4

Check this article I wrote about the recent chart success of UK Hip hop artists that was published on MTV's The Wrap Up today.

To me the last year of success amongst UK Hip hop and UK Grime (or UK 'Rap') has been something I've anticipated for the last 10 years. Throughout most of the noughties, UK 'Rap' on a commercial/chart level consisted of the likes of Big Brovaz sampling classic english musicals or Blazin Squad butchering US hip hop classics, not to mention the 'ferocity' of Mis-teeq showing the world how us British folk rap.

This blurred however the true UK hip hop music, which could be heard from the likes of pirate station Itch FM and weekly event Kung Fu; where I looked up to underground acts like Skinnyman and Taskforce. Alas, despite it's massive underground following, 'British made' Hip Hop was never able to cement a strong reputation amongst the wider audience (especially outside of major cities) which led to labels playing safe and going with 'plastic' (or put simply, marketable) acts in expense of more edgy sounding politically charged material .

Around 2003 I went to see Pro Green (a friend of a friend who'd recently changed his name from 'Oh-Z') battle at the Jumpoff which was then at the Scala, Kings Cross. He was featured in this 2004 BBC entertainment news report, which has plenty of predictable 8 mile comparisons but makes for nostalgic reading 6 years later. It also adds context to his recent no. 3 chart success and despite having a commercial sound, 'I need you tonight' is a good track so you cant hate but congratulate the guy.

Hitting no. 4 in the charts and #1 in the album charts is Plan B with a heavily contrasted sound to his pre-debut album which initially seemed struck me as an acoustic Hackney fusion of Eminem and NYC horror core legend Necro. It seems the tables have now turned as (I suspect under major label influence, and as a result of major UK movie appearences ) he's hit the top spot with a sound more akin to Amy Winehouse, as part of a concept album about his fictional character 'Stickland Banks' being sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. To be fair, singing isn't new to Plan B but I do have reservations with the BBC labelling him a rapper when on the whole he doesn't rap.

From an objective point of view however, even if Prof Green needs to rap over a 1987 sample of INXS, and singing is in fact the plan b for Plan B, it does shed some more light to the platform that is our underground. Especially when a genuine London hip hop act it rises from the obscurity and exceeds 1st week sales of Kelis, who with David Guetta came in at #5 with the smash Acapella, which I reckon will become one of the biggest R&B tracks of 2010.

Skepta to collab with Diddy?

Three days ago P Diddy took to his twitter to announce he’s about to sign his first London-based rapper. On the 16th April he tweeted, “About 2 sign my 1st rapper from London. I can't tell u who it is, but I’ve wanted to sign an artist from the UK my whole life-LONDON STANDUP!!”

Since then my twitter feed has been going crazy with ‘everyone’ trying to guess which local MC is about to join Bad Boy Records. I think I’ve heard nearly every UK rapper’s name mentioned, but it’s fair to say teen rapper Fugative and South London’s Tinie Tempah are the most speculated out the bunch. I personally think he’ll sign Jedward. You never know. Oh actually they’re not from London are they?!

OK all jokes aside, whoever he signs, this can only be a good thing for UK urban music in general. “Team UK” is going global. It’s not just the MCs that should be excited though; Mr Combs is now on the hunt for a grime producer.

@iamdiddy: “Hey london I want to do a grime re mix of hello goonmornin! Who should do it?”

Many people tweeted him back saying that Boy Better Know member Skepta should be chosen for this project.

@iamdiddy: @Skepta ''the people said we should talk. Dm me a contact! Let’s gooooooo!!!”

Diddy then went on to say how much he liked grime.

@iamdiddy: “4 the record I’ve always been a fan of grime I remember the 1st time I heard it! Blew my mind. This is the 1st song I had that it could work.”

I think Diddy and Skepta spoke on the phone or something.

@iamdiddy: @Skepta ''good talkin to you. Let’s see if we can catch a vibe. And if its meant to be then we let the people hear it. Thank u 4 hittin back.”

@Skepta: @iamdiddy ''100% G. Love”

Diddy even retweeted @MTVUK in the conversation, as you know; us lot at MTV love to support UK music where and when we can!

Could this be the time for grime to blow stateside? We do hope so..

For those that don't know, this isn't Skepta's 1st US collab; he made a track called 'we don't give a fuck' with Dipset member Juelz Santana a few years back.. Hopefully this one won't sell Skepta out to loyal grime fanbase.

Scott Storch co-produces new Dr Dre & Jay-Z track "Under Pressure"

Scott Storch is quickly getting back into swing of the music game by lending his hit-making skills to the highly anticipated Dr. Dre single “Under Pressure,” a song that features Jay-Z.

The song, which has yet to leak, is a huge move for the Philadelphia-bred musician, according to a company working closely with Storch.

"To see Scott Storch and Dr. Dre back together, signifies the change in the music industry climate as we know it. This will definitely get the industry back in step with the world,” said Derek Jackson of the Bluewave Group, Inc.

Storch and Dr. Dre have worked together at great lengths in the past, including "Still D.R.E," (which was written by Jay-Z), The Chronic 2000 and a plethora of other works.

Last I heard of Storch was him breaking up with Lil Kim, reports of fiendish tendencies and selling his yacht on e-bay for a ridiculous some of money. Good to hear he's back doing what he does best tho! Detox should be worth the wait...

Video- Young Adz Feat. Benjamin A.D - Dope As It Gets

This one from an artist I wasn't previously aware of, could be due to his age which I reckon is easily below 15 (partly due to the braces in his mouth). But like Alliyah (+ Pretty Ricky) said, 'age is nuthin but a number'. Dot Rotten provides trademark melancholic production and partnered with the gritty Ice Kid-esque street tales, Lewisham's Young Adz makes for a promising hope for the grime scene. Looking forward to hearing more from this guy.

Audio: SHANE ELI - GREY AREA

Grey Area is the first single off of Shane Eli's debut album The Push.
Deeply personal, the hip hop track deals with the issue of race as reflected through Shane's upbringing and personal experiences. The lyrics are heartfelt, but the track is a hopeful one. And although it sounds cliché, it begs repeating that this song is about being true to yourself despite the boxes people try to place you in.

50 Cent Looking for New G-Unit Soldiers

.... and the only name he mentions is (Hollywood star) Robert Pattinson?!?!

According to MTV News, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo will not be joining him on tour this summer. Instead, the G-Unit general is leaving them at home to work on their individual projects while he hits the road, works on his upcoming Black Magic LP, and recruits new members for the G-Unit camp.

“You’ll see new faces, because I’m looking for new artists now,” said the Queens MC. “I’ll sign new artists and take them with me and kinda groom them. I don’t specifically say, ‘I want this kind of artists’ – I look for talent that inspires me, that complements what I do with their own thing. Some of the stuff you can’t teach a person; they gotta have it.”

When asked if he had any particular people in mind, 50 brought up Robert Pattinson, the star of Twilight. “He has a big enough following to be the front line. Twilight ain’t no joke.”

Fif plans to drop Black Magic before the end of summer

Byron - Hip Hop vs. Grime Freestyle

Check this video from UK Hip hop/grime MC Byron. He don't really care for the BPM!!! Byron weaves his way through a mix of Grime and Hip Hop tracks, old and new, to show that lyrics don't have to be about one particular genre or tempo. Sick! Make sure you check his tune with Ghetts, See Me and check his album, 'Jack of none' available at UK Recordshop

Newham Generals in the studio with Jammer

D Double, Footise and Jammer as well as a few others in the studio previewing new material. Definitly looks like some hot material is being cooked up!
