Cypress Hill 2 be sued for $29m for 13 year old interlude

The heading says it all. Syl Johnson; daddy of that fly by night girl that re-sang lauryn hill's sample on All Falls Down by Kanye West? Yea! SylEENA Johnson! Anyway, he's decided to throw a lawsuit upon the Cypress Hill, remember them? yea, that legendary group lying consistently dormant amongst the scene for the last decade, for $29m (dudes in his late 70s but still has his hustle on).

The lawsuit comes from an interlude on Black Sunday (which is an ALL TIME classic; #1 on billboard chart) dating back from 1993. If you want to read an interview with the man responsible, DJ Muggs (legendary producer also behind the boards on House of Pain's Jump Around) click here.
It's over this track below, superbly sampled on 'Hollow Bones' by the Wu. Make sure you check this track as it reflects true life in the past and makes Obama's (hopeful) election the more worthwhile.

The Sarah Palin rap, on behalf of NBC!

This is actually pretty funny, maybe this lady will get signed? Who knows, she's certainly better than Rick Ross, and hes on Def Jam. Look out for her reference to the Meth & Red classic 'Roc Wilder' at the end!

10 Most Hated Hip-Hop Figures of 2008

[From The Rap Up]

10 Most Hated Hip-Hop Figures of 2008

From Curtis Jackson to Officer Rick Ross, meet the 10 publicity-hounding, mud-slinging, mischievous hip-hop figures you most love to hate.

10. DMX
Rappers and jail records are nothing new, but DMX’s rap sheet is will soon surpass his list of recordings. He has been arrested more than four times this year alone: for speeding and animal cruelty in Arizona, attempting to purchase drugs in Miami and failure to appear in court for previous drug charges. He has also pleaded not guilty on charges of identity theft to avoid payment for treatment at a rehabilitation clinic. Not to mention that his less than coherent attack on Obama raised eyebrows in the hip-hop community. Anymore on X would take up the rest of this list.

9. Karrine “Superhead” Steffans
Aside from the tell-all books, radio, web and TV appearances, the “brainy” media magnet is now rumored to be secretly married to Bow Wow and pregnant with his child. Frankly, her antics are just too much for anyone to swallow. Let’s hope her retirement from “hoochery” is for real this time.

8. Tony Yayo
Yayo was arrested this Spring for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old boy who wore a T-shirt bearing the logo of Game’s management company. Apparently that’s not a problem for MTV who recently signed him on to be a part of their “Busted” series where he accompanies police on arrests. And let’s not get started on his infamous interviews, where he often spouts off insults at rappers who are significantly better than him (e.g. Ghostface).

7. Lil Wayne
Weezy is everywhere. From his guitar strumming on SNL to a guest appearance on nearly every major hip-hop release this year, the Lil’ one is simply ubiquitous. And you know what they say about too much of everything. Besides, his constant proclamation of himself as the “Greatest Rapper Alive” is grating on everyone affiliated with hip-hop.

6. T-Pain
T-Pain falls in the same “Please just go away for a little while” category as Lil’ Wayne. The too-frequent producer and vocal collaborator, needs to give it a rest, especially when his real voice isn’t as interesting as the fake one. Funny or Die.com got a piece of the action with a video spoof of T-Pain’s vocoder demanding shine for his contributions to the hitmaker’s success.

5. 50 Cent
50 has watched G-Unit go from top crew to most hated in the last 2 or 3 years. He lost even more credibility when, in an effort to manufacture publicity for T.O.S., he released a taped conversation with a teary-voiced Young Buck discussing financial difficulties, recorded without Buck’s knowledge. That single move turned 50 into 5-0.

4. Suge Knight
In a culture loaded with balls and bravado, Suge Knight still manages to be one of hip-hop’s biggest bullies. With a plethora of legal issues from the dissolution of Death Row Records, reports of girlfriend abuse and murky details of that fateful night of September 7, 1996 in Las Vegas, Knight remains one of the most reviled and feared figures in 2008.

3. R. Kelly
Your feelings about the R&B thug depend on where you stand with this year’s episodes in his never-ending saga. His June acquittal on child pornography charges and Ne-Yo dis track (after the younger crooner’s lawsuit upon dismissal from the Double Up tour), aren’t exactly winning back the hearts of hip-hop fans right now. All this, a few more “Trapped in the Closet” chapters, and it might just be a wrap for the R.

2. Soulja Boy
Since his debut, the ATL-based rapper has been accused of wielding the death knell for an already weakening genre. The catchy hooks and shallow production of his cring-worthy ringtone singles have rhyme revelers of all ages (I’m looking at you, Iceberg) raging against the teen marketing machine.

1. Rick Ross
Most hip-hop heads have been questioning Rick Ross’ potential for longevity in the game for a while, since:

* A. He is not a great rapper and
* B. he epitomizes the reformed drug dealer cliché.

Ross’ cover was completely blown when the The Smoking Gun exposed him as a corrections officer. He first denied the claim, but later retracted after mounting evidence, including an identifying social security number surfaced. Ross then admitted to his earlier career, but insists he never “snitched,” “locked up” or “prosecuted a n****.” He should have come clean in the beginning, now he will be remembered for creating a persona about as authentic as a WWE wrestling character.

Learn how to count with Flowdan and Killa P

The latest video from The Bug taken from "London Zoo" released on Ninja Tune. I'm seriously feelin this bloodclart tune.. love the abstractness of it.. I know I mentioned this before but where the F is Flowdans mixtape or 1st release? Even Killa P has one out and he aint as prolific as Flowdan. Guan wid it family tree!
the Bug - Skeng ft. Killa P and Flowdan

And to my surprise I read in London's morning free paper Metro that this track is being released today as a single. If you've heard that classic single off Roll Deep's album 'Rules and Regulations' named Weed Man you'll recognize a fare few bars!

Wretch 32 - Be Cool

Don't adjust ur speakers just yet, the tune plays fine despite the low quiet intro, and when it starts, boy does it bang. This, in my opinion is a graceful way of 'going left'. For those unsure what that means, it's a term that hip hop/grime commentators, like me or you use to describe an artist moving away from their comfort zone and making their sound either more commercial or more alternative/indie sounding; depending on where they began in the first place. Eg. Hip hop is dead by nas has this great and over looked line about him controversially signing to Def Jam:
"Gave my man my right, I could have went left
So like my girl Foxy, the kid went Def/deaf"

On Be Cool, Wretch talks about things that hip hop was founded on. Looking fly, having a good time and (wait for it).... being cool. It's tracks like this that grime needs more of to appeal to an audience who still thinks that grime music doesnt go beyond 'Pow' or that So Solid stereotype. There's no doubt that Wretch will get slated by the grime purists (in fact he has; here.) who say this is all a bit 'bait' but as you will see on that grimeforum.com thread, the tune is also praised. In my view its a substantial tune that has it all

Willie The Kid is the sh!t.

An album from an artist I been following for the last year or 2, Willie the Kid, repping Atlanta, has hit the streets and it's straight FIRE. The albums called 'Absolute Greatness'. Brought into the game by DJ Drama and regularly seen with fellow Aphiliate, LA the Darkman, who 's also from Atlanta, but sounds like a Brooklyn emcee who's been grindin for years. Peep their collab with Twista and Devin the Dude and Denaun Porter on a CLASSIC track called 'Beneath The Diamonds' and their equal classic track with one of greatest synth based beats entitled 'Makin Money Smokin Weed'. The best way to describe Willie is a more street version of Lupe but with that similar classic combo of lyrics, flow and swagger... mad swagger! I could try to give a proper review but instead I'm gonna give you the tracks I thought stood out instead:

  • Splendid!
  • Coogi Down (with a gully Biggie sample)
  • The W
  • Let Em Know [Feat. Lonnie Mack & LA The Darkman]
  • Love for Money

Check the video below, a lead single of the album; entitled 'Love for Money' with Trey Songz providing a great hook. Not too keen on Gucci Mane's verse but generally quite a banger, with a heavy hitting bass.

Willie The Kid - Love For Money feat. Gucci Mane, LA The Darkman, Yung Joc, Bun B & Trey Songz

New grime track from I.N.C.

New grime/dubstep material from INC, produced by Medison. Some real dubstep influenced double time complex rhyme shit right here, repping North London. Expect some more on this vibe pretty soon. Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

I'd put Sway and Wretch in my top 5 UK rappers right now but...WTF?

Seriously though, I do rate these dudes as actual acts, over just an emcee, and correct me if i'm mistaken, but it seems as though Sway and Wretch's bars and subtle metaphors would most likely slip past a bunch of 8 year olds, not to mention their teachers..
An ordeal like this seems only like something the Met would dish out as Community service?!

I reckon this must've been conceived thru Wretch's grammatically themed anthem and Sway's charming mass appeal, but I don't think little Derek thought he'd still be doing this after signing(/singing?) with Konvict Musik!

http://wretch32.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/school-kids-check-me-and-sways-punctuation/

In the mean time make it your duty to listen to this tune at least 3 times, which I'm officially chiseling in as one of the (if not the #1) tunes of 2008 and strong a forthcoming track of his new album which came out just this week; Wretchrospective. Make sure you buy that!

Wretch 32 Ft Ghetto & Badness - Ina The Ghetto

And a nomination for LINE of the year from Ghetto (or Ghetts as he's now officially known)

Sincere, Joell Ortiz & Natty - Once Upon A Time (Remix)

A never before seen Brooklyn to Finsbury Park collaboration, US/UK exclusive video. Sincere, Joell Ortiz and Natty connect. Tunes pretty live but Joell Ortiz' verse and performance in the vid are a bit cringey in my opinion. Can't understand why a guy would be so happy after being dropped of Aftermath either. A big look for the UK tho, get some exposure from the yankee cats, though this vid doesn't prove that we can be gutter, which is their general view of the UK scene imo..
