Audio: Hypeman Sage - Anti-Bouncer

New joint here from the rapidly rising MC Hypeman Sage over a garage production courtesy of BuckOne, reminiscent of some early 2000s garage ish but brought into 2010! I can definitely relate to what he's talking about on this one!

Audio: Andrew Tosh - What a gwaan

Brand new joint here from Andrew Tosh (son of the reggae legend Peter Tosh and nephew of Bunny Wailer) from his new album 'I to I'. The track aims to provide a reflection of 'what a gwaan' in society, sang over a strong 'new roots' rhythm track.

Video: Mytus - Ain't no badboy

Sick video right here. Not new but heavy none the less! Production from Lewi White.

30 October 2010

Audio: Iron Solomon ft. Cassidy – Rule 4081

Heavy joint here, the first I've heard from Iron Solomon who made his name as one of the all time greatest battle MCs [kinda like Professor Green for the UK]. He's considered one of the greatest of recent years and has proven himself against the best of the best. I'm pretty certain that there's a lot of tongue in cheek elements in this so don't take it too literally!

Iron Solomon ft. Cassidy – Rule 4081

Here he is against the UK's very own Mic Assassin:

Audio: Tayyib Ali - The Right Time

As far as radio/club hip hop goes this is pretty dope, reminds of Fabolous a bit. First I've heard from the 18 year old from Philadelphia but will look out in the future. Produced by Hoodfamous.

In case you didn't know Taio Cruz went no. 1 in USA with this, with Ludacris vocalling rather than Tinchy over here in UK!

Event: RoadSound Live: Dot Rotten, Random Impulse, Black The Ripper

Headlining on the night will be Klashnekoff, and Black The Ripper, supported by Skandal, Dot Rotten and Random Impulse. Hosted by Mystro, with DJ Gone on the turntables.
If you respect real Hip-Hop, this is an event not to be missed as everyone on this line up is very sick in their own right!

Video: Trozion @ I LUV LIVE 25 Oct

Check this recent footage of Trozion, a 16 year old promising MC I've been supporting for a minute. He also recently performed at Bigga Fish. Great to hear Trozion over a band, plenty more to come from this kid, trust! Look out for his forthcoming debut mixtape 'Soul of A Soldier' dropping VERY soon...

Video: Amplify Dot ft Annonymos - Born Ready

Really like this artist, who I saw perform at I Luv Live at the Queen of Hoxton a couple of weeks ago, and was impressed with her performance so got her to send something over! The video itself is some genuinely good hip hop in my view. Annonymos is majorly on a Will.I.Am flex in this one I reckon, but comes nice so all respect is due!

Video: Revilo (aka Row.D Beats) - FIRE

New video from my boy Revilo Row D Beats - off his new album Row-d-ness...

My interview and freestyle video with Revilo from earlier this year, watch out the bars at the end, trust!!

Video: SB.TV A64 - Devlin F64 #2 [Special Edition]

I'm one the few people that actually saw this example of Devlin's genius live before seeing it on youtube! He played it as the closing the track of his gig tonight in Camden Town alongside Ed Sheeran who warmed the crowd before he came on. Review to follow!

Video: Show TuFli - 'The Block' ft. Vado & 'Normal Sin'

Two videos here from a rapper called Show TuFli from Harlem, NYC I've just come across. Straight away by listening you can hear his authentic New York style and has a conscious element. Not conscious as in self righteous nerdy rap, but conscious as in aware of his surroundings and rapping what he knows. Intelligent boom bap rap here for 2010.

Review: Maverick Sabre - Run to the roof (produced by Starkey)

'Run to the roof' is a new track from Maverick Sabre's forthcoming mixtape 'Travelling man' and is almost as eclectic as the man himself. A fusion of grime, hip hop and folk; The production is laid down by Starkey; a rapidly rising american grime/dubstep beat-smith who's been putting out beats and remixes since 2005, with his recent collaboration with Badness on 'OK Luv' standing out for me.

'Run to the roof' kicks off with haunting strings and descends into a bass-heavy pursuit orientated tale about fleeing from the 'sirens breaking silence' (aka the London Met), somewhat reminiscent of Dizzee Rascal's under rated 'Sirens'.  The song has an anxious vibe to it, which is one of the unique trademarks of grime production.

Not a track that can be listened to just once, the chorus provide a sense of relief from the nervous chase. Starkey and Sabre, who seemed destined to work together, digress to provide a smoother input; Starkey showing his US 'golden age' hip-hop influence and Maverick his more melodic vocal input, reflecting on how 'trouble follows' everywhere he goes...

Not one for the charts, but this is well composed and thought out; destined to prove these two talented musicians' worth amongst the elite of the scene.

Video: B-MUS KHALIL - GOOD DIE YOUNG

Powerful video here from an artist I'd never heard of until peeping this video I got sent over e-mail. Reflective and deep track about youths getting murdered, and is all too prevelant after the murder of teen in Plaistow, East London over the weekend.

Video: Kader - Eyes

I see big things coming for this track; one of the better R&G (rhythm & grime) tunes I've heard recently. Kader has previously worked on productions with G Frsh, Lefty, Corey Johnson, Mike GLC, Crey Mey (Bubblegum) and Donae'o. His debut single "Eyes" drops 15th November, taken from an album currently being put together for release in the first half of 2011.

25 October 2010

Video: Teratron feat. Backyard Bully - Go Skitzo

Can't explain why, but I really like this one. Maybe just because it's well produced, well vocalled and it has a sick video?! Simple as that...

Video: GTsolo - Best Out Ya Speakers (Prod By Skeamz)

Big boy grime tune I just found by an artist called GT Solo randomly.

Video: Blatantly Blunt meets Random Impulse

Had a chat with him back stage at a recent 'I Luv Live' event at the Queen of Hoxton in East Central London. It happens every other Monday and features a showcase of established and up-and-coming UK artists across many [urban] genres... Don't miss out!

Man Found Guilty Of Stabbing Professor Green

The man who attacked Professor Green last year has been found guilty of stabbing the MC in the neck with a broken bottle.

Anthony Jones was accused of the 'cowardly and vicious' assault on the Just Be Good To Green rapper, following a disagreement with Pro at Cargo nightclub in East London on 23rd May 2009.

The 25-year old is said to have taunted the rapper before he 'thrusted a broken bottle' into Green's neck so hard, he was almost cut to the bone.

Green, real name Stephen Manderson, gave evidence in the case, telling the jury: "All I saw was a hand come up to my face and neck, it was his [Jones'] right hand, there was a very warm feeling in my neck,"

"I put my hand up and blood was everywhere. I phoned my mother and my grandmother and I said goodbye."

The I Need You Tonight hitmaker apparently fought back the tears as he showed the court the six-inch scar on his neck, adding: "I was scared. I know what happens when people tend to get cut in the neck. I was extremely lucky, nothing lasting, fortunately."

Jones, from Finsbury Park, London, was convicted of GBH with intent at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, with his sentence expected to follow in the next few weeks.

Here's a recent promo vid for the mixtape, spitting bars in Tottenham with INC

23 October 2010

Baracka Flacka Flame - Head Of The State (Hard In The Paint Freestyle)

The best parody video i've seen the whole year. Directors Martin Usher and James Davis re-create Wacka Flocka Flame's hit 'Hard in the paint' (one of my top songs of 2010) but with Barack Obama. As with most parodies, it's worth seeing the original so it all makes sense!

Video: Wiley & M.J Cole - From The Drop

Massive tune here, production and vocals are on a par I reckon. Yet another video where Wiley doesn't feature! Not sure why he wouldn't want to be in the vid, maybe they just never asked him cos they knew he probably wouldn't turn up, despite the guarantee of no foxes!

Review: Mobo Awards Results 2010

Foreword: I didn't bother watching the Mobos. I could've been much harsher on this but I didn't want to sound like one of those bitter anti-pop culture bloggers so take a read and leave your feedback ...

MOBO founder Kanya King declared last that “urban music is the new pop music” and she wasn’t wrong as the 15th year of the awards graced the Echo arena, Liverpool. The first year that the awards ventured out of the country’s capital was a significant one for the organization though unfortunately did not do enough to appease the critics.

Predictable winners such as Gyptian’s best reggae act (more-or-less entirely based on his radio-friendly ‘Hold yuh’, despite the other nominees’ more authentic and diverse output) and Eminem claiming best international artist, presumably for ‘Recovering’ from a ‘Relapse’ of mediocrity were rife, there were some worthy winners. Professor Green achieving ‘best hip hop/grime’ award topped off a year he couldn’t of dreamed up 18 months ago. The 26 year old from Hackney fought off tough competition from the likes of Skepta and Giggs to grab the gong perhaps as a result of his catchy singles hitting #3 and #5, so all respect is due to him. However whether he was genuinely the best artist from the hip hop and grime scene is subjective, as the award was once again a reflection of chart success, though I definitely admire his ability to make it from a battle rapper to battling his way out of a sea of screaming teenage girls.

Coca-Cola’s World Cup endorsement of Somali born Canadian K’naan undoubtedly aided his Best African accolade after the re-make of his track ‘Wavin flag’ was adapted for 20 different global regions. Three chart storming singles from Tinie Tempah led to the south Londoner grabbing 2 Mobos for best newcomer and best video for his weaker follow up to the debut single Pass Out. Tinie’s debut single however was somehow pipped to best single by N-Dubz and Mr Hudson’s ‘Playing with fire’, certainly one of the more unexpected winners of the night.

JLS were awarded best album which mystified me as their sound seems to derive more from an L.A. dance-pop studio than that of homegrown urban music producers, which I had believed this ceremony was here to recognise.

The dubstep scene, which reared it’s head in the charts for the first time with Katy B’s #5 hit ‘On a mission’ is surely overdue a gong, nd the exclusion of best DJ was perhaps an error.

15 years in, and the Mobos is still relevant to many, but as the internet has quantatively proven who is really grabbing the attention maybe Kanya King et al should look beyond the artists with major label deals in order to keep the actual music fans interested...

Check this 360 degree music video for the track ‘Coming to get me’, by Professor Green exclusively for the Doritos “Late Night” campaign... this is a new style of music video and good to see Prof G jumping on a DnB track. He's achieved a lot this year and this track follows suit!

**Free Download Special**: Franko Fraize - The 140 Show EP

Click here or the cover to download: http://frankofraize.bandcamp.com

As a grime MC from out of London it's often a challenge to convince the public of your talent but the '140 show' will hopefully open the doors to others as the mixtape proves that grime isn't restricted to the major cities.

Having been compared by some to the likes of Devlin and Skinnyman, the 24 year old from Thetford (a Londoners' expat town between Norwich and Cambridge), presents The 140 Show which is co-signed by BlatantlyBlunt.

Sharp witted bars and socially conscious, Fraize reflects the depth and precision of the beats he rides over thru out, produced predominantly by DJ IC..

Fraize has already had approaches from American and French producers to remix his work since the mixtape dropped 2 days ago.
'The 140 show' is the first free download from Blatantly Blunt, following the commercial release of M.I.K - [URL="http://workaholic.tk"]Workaholic[/URL] in 2009.

Video: Dead Prez - Don't Waste It (teaser)

Dead Prez drop us a taster of what's due to come in their forthcoming mixtape with DJ Drama for his epic Gangsta Grillz season which for M1 & sticman will be called Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz!
Really like the look of this one; looks like Dead Prez are returning to doing satirical parodies of famous recent tracks. In this case they're jump on Gucci Mane's track Wasted which i really liked when it come out around last year.

Video: Kano - Spaceship

A difficult but technically brilliant beat is handled as only Kano could in this new one, featured on US site, OnSmash. I've noticed Kano gets a lot of the epic beats and deals with them as someone of his stature only could, but can't help but often feel he's caught between commercial and underground which isn't aided by his incosistency!

Definitely feeling this tho, will have to check the album Method To The Maadness and decide for sure.

Video: Behind the scenes @ Stylah/Strapzy/Remz video

The grime report get some exclusive backstage footage from the video [by SBTV] for this track which looks to be a banger... After getting a peek into the video, peak is the word that comes to mind! Look out for Stylah's latest album Treading Water...

DJ Premier's Guru dedication speech @ BET Awards '10

DJ Premier concisely yet passionately addresses the BET awards audience for first time since his Gangstarr partner Guru's untimely death earlier this year. I must admit I was unaware of Premier in fact being only part of the 3rd phase of Gangstarr...
Towards the end Premo drops some subtle hints regarding the truths (or lack of them) around the controversial circumstances of Guru's passing. Closure? Looks like it.

18 October 2010

Video: BABY BLUE - DOUBLE UP FT SEAN STAR

Really strong track here from Baby Blue produced by my homie Nutty P. The fusion of hip hop, grime and dubstep on this one makes it a track not to miss out on and a great comeback track from one of the UK's most talented female rappers...

Video: Tinchy Stryder - Barclays Freestyle

Tinchy drops his bars over Teddy's latest banger, Barclays. Does anyone still need proof Tinchy's still grime?

Video: Twista feat. Raekwon – The Heat

Really feeling this track ever since I heard it on a DJ Kay Slay mixtape a little while back. Love the swagger Twista and Raekwon bring on the track lyrically and in their flow. Production from The Legendary Traxster & No ID top this off to make it a classy hood banger. Directed by G. Visuals.

Audio: Skilzie - What I Do

Disgustly sick track here from Skilzie, a grime MC i've been rating for a long time! Mad dubstep production from Nytz.

Here he is on my show from a little while back.

Audio: WILEY - ROAMING (PROD. BY ZDOT)

Massive new banger here from Will and Z Dot, one of my favourite out of the current crop of grime producers. He's worked with the likes of Ghetts (on Artillery) and done a lot of stuff with Doller the Dustman. Looks like Wiley's back on his 300 tracks a week workrate flex!

Video: Big Cakes drops Fire in the Booth [1xtra]

Charlie Sloth invites Big Cakes to take on the mic for Fire In The Booth on 1xtra - and he tears it down!

Big Cakes on my show a little while back... Please excuse the dodgy filming/editing, just listen to the bars!!

Video: MC TIGZ - STREETS OF RAGE

Hardbodied lyrical grime right here from 18 year old MC Tigz repping Lewisham aka Blue Borough. Will be keeping a sharp eye open for Tigz in the future. Download his mixtape here!!

Video: Bizarre ft. King Gordy – Wild Like Us

I wasn't expecting to like this but it's actually pretty dope!! Off Bizarre’s Friday Night At St. Andrews, out now. Big up to the only D12 member that still has a career bar Em and Denaun Porter (kon artist)!

Video: Sp - Constant Creme (Link Up TV)

New video here from a Birmingham artist called SP I spotted at the open mic section of UrbanDevelopment's 'Industry Takeover' event I attended. Looks to me like SP is one of the new wave of 0121 (thats the Birmingham dialling code) MCs about to take their fare share of the pie.

SP was featured on 1xtra's Homegrown Podcast, and featured as the week's free download:

'Birmingham That's My Bed' is produced by Shackles, who is a dubstep producer from Leeds / Sheffield. For more info on SP and Shackles go to www.spzabout.com and www.soundcloud.com/littlec-1.

Audio: Devlin - Bud, Sweat & Beers (Album Sampler Mixed By Jaguar Skills)

Definitely one of the most anticipated albums in grime over the last 2 years. Despite Dev's getting a major label deal he's still retained an element of that dark/edgy element so enough respect is due... Have to say I'm not feeling the cover tho. Dull and un-original IMHO which is contrary to the artist in question...
Devlin - Bud, Sweat & Beers (Album Sampler Mixed By Jaguar Skills) by Roy Thomas

Mix: Royal-T's FREE Happy 20th Birthday Mix

One of the grime scene's best emerging producers drops a mix for his own B'day. New heat from JME & Tempz, M.I.K and a few instrumentals to get your head banging...

Video: Rick Ross (Feat. Chrisette Michele & Drake) - Aston Martin Music

One of the many track's to cement 2010 as Rick Ross' (and while we're on that, Drake's) year. Radio friendly but 'hood-pass intact' story of the of drug money flaunting here which works well done with class [as it has been done here] . Production dutied from J.U.S.T.I.C.E League who have formed their own sound in the Florida/Southern hip hop scene over the last 3 years working with anyone who's anyone!

Drake delivers to the highest degree and the hook slots in nicely. I'm not generally a Rick Ross fan but this is one of the tracks swinging my opinion in his favour...

Video: Plies - Why U Hate

Just as I had more-or-less given up on Florida's favourite Goon after happily sitting thru 2 of his albums which were followed by painful mediocrity, he comes with 'Why you hate'.

A socially conscious and self-referential video which brings me back to the track which initially gained my respect of him '100 years' back in 2007. Make of this what you will but I'm sure this opinion is widely felt not just across the USA but globally...

Video: Hopsin - Motherfucker

Don't skip this track based on your pre-conceptions of what you expect to hear!

Since I got sent 'Motherfucker' in April, I've had the track heavy rotation on my mp3 player and never feel to skip it! The Southern Californian MC is someone I was unaware about but definitely feel to seek out some more of his shit! Feeling the video a lot which was directed and edited by the man himself...

P.S... If you had the late 90's Eminem comparison in your head so did I, but not exactly a bad comparison to make!

Review: KRS ONE @ The HMV Forum, Kentish Town

Check my review for the recent gig hip hop pioneer played in North London which was featured on MTV's Urban Music Blog, The Wrap Up which I regularly contribute to...

Saturday night saw one of the biggest legends in the history of hip-hop music play for a crowd that ranged from present day hip-hop fundamentalists, to middle aged nine-to-fivers reminiscing on their teenage years. The mighty KRS-One filled out the HMV Forum in Kentish Town to a rapturous reception that few could receive and many would aspire to...

Looking charged up as ever, the 45-year-old self-proclaimed ‘teacher’ performed a lion’s share of hits from his 26-year career that certainly proved that he, if anyone, deserved the title ‘pioneer’. Having performed his classics like ‘Bridge Is over’, ‘Sound Of The Police’ and ‘MCs Act Like They Don’t Know’ countless times, I wouldn’t be surprised if KRS utilised his worldwide audiences as a source of inspiration for himself. This might sounds odd, but contrasting the demographics and crowd responses from a London performance to that of an Athens performance (for example) could provide him with a form of market research, allowing him to perfect his stage show and keep the bookings coming until his arthritis prevents him from pumping his fist in the air while the crowd chant, ‘Hip-hop! Hip-hop!’
With this being a KRS-One gig, I didn’t expect just a recital of songs and the odd inter-track rambling about whatever was bugging him the most that week. No sir. Along with hype man and former world-champion freestyler Supernatural, he conducted an interview in the form of rap which could only be done as professionally as it was by someone with such a prolific history and proficiency. He also got crowd members up to hold a break dance session which seemed somewhat pointless albeit mildly entertaining. One of the better segments was an impressions style dedication song; rapping the in the style of Biggie, Slick Rick and Busta Rhymes, who he obviously rates amongst the greatest ever. Who doesn’t?
He also provided the crowd with a souvenir to remember this experience by, in the form of a torrent of tennis balls thrown out into the crowd. The tennis balls themself had no real value, especially compared to normal concert giveaways like a t-shirt or CD, but he made it clear that it was more a symbolic souvenir of the event than a gift that you should actually make use of! The biggest flaw of this idea was that they all got thrown toward the middle and back of the crowd ,as opposed to the front where (I can only assume) the most loyal fans had gathered!
Other sections of the show that stood out included his year-by-year portrayal of hip-hop’s formative decade, breaking down who did what for hip-hop in the 1970s. This reminded me of his album track entitled ‘Down The Charts’, which is a must listen for anyone that wants to hear a track with a format so unique and accurate that it contributed to KRS being placed in my ‘Top 5 Dead Or Alive’ list.

Audio: Bill Posters - Losing Your Mind feat. Mikill Pane

New joint here from a producer called Bill Posters (love the name!) and an MC I've been rating recently called Mikill Pane. I'm not known to be the biggest dubstep fan but when there's a good MC on top I tend to like it a bit more :) Check my interview with Mikill Pane for MTV here...

Download: 2 Griminal mixtapes

Griminal has recently released 2 editions of his Grimsom mixtape, featuring posse cuts and freestyles over grime and hip hop bangers. Griminal's definitely an MC with a lot of potential and diversity to rhyme over whatever type of beats he wants so check these for some freeness!

Check this for his brand new free download 'Grimsom II':

Audio/Download: Redlight & Toddla T - Sushi Riddim ft J2k, Roses Gabor, Lady Chann & Jammer

Check this free download which was a track made live on radio for MistaJam's 1xtra show. He set two of the biggest 'urban dance' producers of 2010, Redlight and Toddla T a challenge - to record a track from scratch during the show, drawing upon the vocal talents from some of the UK's finest.

Video: Riko Dan - The Phone Call

I'm not someone that promotes gun crime and violence but this video is something else. Produced by DJ Myrikal, a German based producer from NZ this video is nothing but high octane on-the-edge story telling grime... Big track all round!

Ra Diggs Faces Life After Brooklyn Drug Arrest

Murda Team emcee Ra Diggs was arrested in Manhattan on Tuesday. Federal officers charged the rapper with narcotics distribution in Brooklyn’s Gowanus housing projects. Authorities have been tracking Diggs, real name Ronald Herron, and eight other men for over two years even using Diggs’ Twitter account and YouTube videos to keep tabs on his activities.

During their investigation, which began in 2008, Federal officers made dozens of undercover buys outside of the Gowanus Houses, the New York Daily News is reporting. Diggs is also being investigated in regards to several open murder cases. The rapper previously beat murder charges in 2002.

Diggs is probably best known for his association with Murda Team, a Rap group which also features Uncle Murda and rising star Waka Flocka Flame. His biggest break may have been his appearance on Waka’s Flockaveli album which was released the same day Diggs was arrested. If convicted the Brooklyn native faces life in prison.
